The Grid/Graph is a container that holds the actual dataset report. This section provides formatting information for the Grid/Graph itself, not for the dataset report or its displayed data. For information to edit a dataset report within a Grid/Graph control, see Editing a dataset report displayed as a grid or Editing a dataset report displayed as a graph.
These formatting options affect the Grid/Graph object on the document, not the formatting on the report grid, such as formatting metrics or rows. Formatting options include:
Borders, including 3D borders and drop shadows
Background, including transparency and gradient colors
When you add a new Grid/Graph to a document, the formatting of the Grid/Graph is determined by the control's defaults. You can change any of the formatting options.
The following list provides some useful formatting suggestions:
Make the Grid/Graph control appear three-dimensional, like a button, with the 3D effect. For steps, see Applying 3D effects to controls.
Let the content behind the Grid/Graph show through by setting the backstyle to transparent. For steps, see Applying a transparent background to controls. The actual grid report or graph report displays regardless of the backstyle setting. The backstyle applies to any part of the Grid/Graph object that the grid report or graph report does not cover. For example, the grid report can be smaller than the Grid/Graph container, such that the Grid/Graph container is visible around the edges of the report display.
"Float" the Grid/Graph control over the background by using a drop shadow. For steps, see Applying drop shadows to controls.
Create a gradual color change by blending two colors using gradient colors on a control. For more information, see Applying gradient colors.
Display pop-up text with a tooltip when a user positions the cursor over the Grid/Graph in MicroStrategy Web. The tooltip can provide extra information, such as an expanded description of the dataset report. For steps, see Creating pop-up tooltips in controls.
Display a Grid/Graph control to other document designers in Design Mode while hiding it from users viewing the document in Interactive Mode, Editable Mode, Express Mode, or Flash Mode. To do this, you hide the control that contains the information by using the Visible property. For steps, see Hiding a control.
Allow users to minimize and maximize the Grid/Graph control or view the Grid/Graph's underlying dataset report with a title bar. The title bar also displays a title, which helps identify the grid report or graph report displayed within the Grid/Graph control. Title bars provide documents with the feel of a portal and help create a dashboard look and feel. For steps, see Adding title bars to Grid/Graphs.
Quickly change a Grid/Graph control from a graph display to a grid display and back with the Quick switch button. For steps, see Enabling Quick Switch for Grid/Graphs.
Enable a transition animation for Flash Mode. A transition animation is a visual transition that occurs when a Grid/Graph control is first displayed in Flash Mode. Examples are Blur, Fade, and Iris. For steps, see Enabling transition animations for Grid/Graphs and panel stacks in Flash.
Format the background of a Grid/Graph, including the background color used to highlight selected items for a Grid/Graph enabled as a selector. For more information, see Formatting the background of a Grid/Graph.
