Open the document in Design or Editable Mode.
Expand the section where you want to add the selector by clicking the plus sign next to the section name.
Click the arrow next to the Selector Control icon 
and then choose the selector style from the drop-down list. For examples
of each selector style, see
Defining
a selector.
Click a location on your document
in which to place the selector. The selector is added to the document.
Note: You cannot place a selector in the Detail section
of a document.
You can resize the selector by clicking and dragging its handles.
To format the selector, right-click the selector and select Properties and Formatting. The Properties and Formatting dialog box opens.
From the left, choose Selector.
If you choose either the Metric Slider or Metric Qualification styles, the Action Type is automatically set to Metric Qualification and cannot be changed. Perform the following steps:
Select a Source from the drop-down list. The Source list contains all of the metrics in all of the datasets in the document. The selector filters the target based on the metric selected as the Source.
By default, the metric's values are filtered, but you can change it. From the Qualify On drop-down list, select one of the following:
To filter on the metric's values, select Value.
To rank the metric's value, where 1 is the highest value, and then filter by rank, select Rank Highest.
To rank the metric's value, where 1 is the lowest value, and then filter by rank, select Rank Lowest.
To filter the data to display the top x% of items in the target, select Rank % Highest. For example, if the target Grid/Graph contains eight items, the Rank % Highest =25 displays the top two items.
To filter the data to display the bottom x% of items in the target, select Rank % Lowest. For example, if the target Grid/Graph contains eight items, the Rank % Lowest =25 displays the bottom two items.
If a title bar is displayed for the metric condition selector, a user can change this setting.
From the Action Type drop-down list, select one of the following:
To have the selector display a list of elements from the attribute chosen in the Source field, choose Select Element. If you choose this option, select a Source from the drop-down list. The Source list contains all of the attributes in all of the datasets in the document.
To have the selector display a list of the metrics available in the Grid/Graphs chosen as the Target, choose Select Metric. Metrics that are within text fields in the target are not listed. For example, a panel stack is selected as a Target and contains a metric in a text field. That Metric is not displayed in the Select Metric list.
To have the selector display a list of the panels available in the panel stack chosen as the Target, choose Select Panel. If the selector style is set to Check Boxes, Select Panel is unavailable, since you cannot display multiple panels simultaneously. Select a different style to display panels.
From the list of Available Targets on the right, select the Grid/Graphs, panel stacks, or other selectors you want to use as targets for the selector, then click > to add them to the list of Selected Targets:
If the Action Type is Select Panel, you can only select a single panel stack. The panels in this panel stack are displayed in the selector.
If the Action Type is Select Element or Select Metric, you can select single or multiple Grid/Graphs, panel stacks, or any combination of Grid/Graphs and panel stacks. The target Grid/Graph displays the elements or metrics that the user chooses in the selector.
Note: If targets are automatically maintained, the Available targets and Selected targets lists are unavailable. All Grid/Graphs and panel stacks in the same document section or panel as the selector are displayed in the Selected targets list. You can disable automatic targets by clicking the click here link and clicking OK. If you do, all selectors in the layout are no longer automatically maintained. For more information about disabling automatic target maintenance, see Automatically maintaining targets for selectors.
A selector can either filter or slice the data:
The selections made in a filtering selector are used to filter the underlying dataset before the metric values are aggregated at the level of the Grid/Graph that is displayed in the document. To define the selector to filter data, select the Apply selections as a filter check box.
The selections made in a slicing selectors are used to determine which slices of data are combined and shown in the Grid/Graph. To define the selector to slice data, clear the Apply selections as a filter check box.

By
default, the selector allows the user to display all the elements or metrics
in the Target at one time. To disable this, clear the
Show option for All check box.
Note: This option is not available if:
The Action Type is set to Select Panel or Metric Condition
The Style is set to Slider and the Allow multiple selections check box is selected.
By default, the All option is displayed as (All) in the selector. You can overwrite this by entering text into the Alias field. This option is only available if the Show option for All check box is selected.
You can choose to either include or exclude the values from the target by default. This means that the items that a user chooses in the selector can display in the target, or they can be hidden. If the selector title bar is displayed, a user can change between including or excluding data for metric condition selectors. If the selector's title bar is not displayed, then this default setting is used. For examples, see Determining whether the selector includes or excludes data: Selection type. From the Selection Type drop-down list, select either Include or Exclude. The Selection Type option is unavailable for metric qualification and panel stack selector.
Click OK to return to the document.
