Troubleshooting

Cannot execute a document

There is a setting available to administrators that forces all documents to be executed as a PDF, if the document has PDF set as an available display mode. (The setting is called Default Document Execution Mode, and it can be set to PDF.) If this setting is enabled and a document does not have PDF as one of its available display modes, then the document can no longer be executed by clicking its name/link. The document can still be executed in any of its available display modes by using the icons to the right of the document's name.

Flash Mode does not appear in the View menu

To view a document in Flash Mode, the following requirements must be met:

An image is not displayed in Flash Mode

A widget is not displayed in Flash Mode

Some graph objects are not displayed or display differently in Flash Mode

No search results are displayed in the Chinese help

When you search for a word or phrase on the Search tab in the Chinese language help, you must insert a space between each Chinese character that you type.

Options for prompted reports are displayed when saving an unprompted report

When a saved, prompted report is reopened and the prompts are all removed, attempting to save your progress displays the Save As dialog box. However, the save options for prompted reports (such as the Save report as prompted check box) are still available, despite the fact that the report no longer contains any prompts.

These settings are ignored when the report is saved and do not affect the report results. Click OK to close the Save As dialog box and save the report normally.

An "Error loading" message is displayed when a user attempts to scan a barcode on the iPhone to answer a prompt

To support the scanning of barcodes using MicroStrategy Mobile for iPhone, you must store the barcode data used in the associated prompt with a database data type that supports text data. MicroStrategy recommends using the VarChar data type for your database to store the barcode data.

The Time Series widget does not display all data points

The number of data points displayed in a Time Series widget is determined by the maximum number of rows displayed in the grid on which it is based. For steps to change the number of data points displayed for:

I want to format the “No Data Returned” message that appears in a report or document

You can format the "No Data Returned" message that appears in a document when no data is returned in a grid or graph. For a grid or graph displayed in a document, this message is displayed in all Web Modes except Flash Mode. For steps, see the MicroStrategy Document Creation Guide.

Enabling caching for static files

If you frequently run documents or dashboards that contain static content, such as .swf, .css, and .js files that do not change between the times in which the document is run, you can cache these static files. This allows you to run documents without downloading files that do not change each time you execute a document.

The following steps enable caching when dashboards are executed. Steps are provided for Internet Explorer Version 7 and Firefox Version 3.6.8. Check the Internet Explorer or Firefox documentation for the latest accurate steps and additional information.

To enable caching in Internet Explorer

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.

  2. Click Delete under Browsing History.

  3. Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete files.

  4. Click Yes to delete your temporary internet files.

  5. Click Close to return to the Internet Options dialog box.

  6. Under Browsing History, click Settings.

  7. Select the Automatically option under Check for newer versions of stored pages.

  8. In the Disk space to use field, type 250.

  9. Click OK to return to the Internet Options dialog box.

  10. Click OK to save changes.

To enable caching in Firefox

  1. From the Tools menu, select Options.

  2. Click Advanced. On the Network tab, click Clear Now to clear the cache.

  3. In the Use up to __ MB of space for the cache field, type 250.

  4. Click OK to save changes.

Cannot access the widget properties for an iPhone or iPad widget

If you attempt to modify the properties of an iPhone or iPad widget, Web displays the following message:

The grid headers should not be merged. Please update the grid.

You can choose to merge the row headers of a report in order to automatically merge all headers with the same value into one header. However, merged row headers are not supported for iPhone and iPad widgets. Steps are below to unmerge row headers for an iPhone or iPad widget. For more information on merging headers, see the Basic Reporting Guide.

To unmerge row headers for a widget in a document

  1. Right-click the Grid/Graph, then select Properties and Formatting. The Properties and Formatting dialog box is displayed.

  2. From the left, select Grid.

  3. From the Rows column, clear the Merge check box.

  4. Click Apply to apply changes, or OK to save changes and return to the document.

To unmerge row headers for a report displayed as an iPhone or iPad widget

  2. From the Rows column, clear the Merge check box.

  3. Click OK to save changes and return to the report.

The Information Window in a Map widget always displays the same information, regardless of which map marker is selected on the iPhone

When you define an Information Window for a Map widget displayed on the iPhone, you must first define the layout to use as the Information Window. You must group data in this layout by the Map widget's location attribute, which provides the location information for each map marker displayed in the widget.

To select the attribute to use to group data in the Information Window layout

  1. Open the document containing the Information Window layout in Design or Editable Mode.

  2. From the Dataset Objects panel to the left, right-click the location attribute, then select Add to Grouping. The attribute is added to the Group By area of the layout.

Changes made to a widget in Express Mode are reverted when saving or switching to a different display mode

When you make a change to the display of a widget in Express Mode, such as changing the metric displayed on the horizontal axis of an Interactive Bubble Grid widget, or changing the attribute elements displayed in the widget using a selector, these changes are no longer displayed when the widget is saved or displayed in a display mode other than Express Mode. Instead, make changes to the widget and save it in a display mode other than Express Mode, such as Editable Mode or Flash Mode.

Changes to the display of data in an analysis are lost when using the browser's refresh button

When you sort, pivot, filter, or manipulate the data displayed in an analysis, these changes may be lost if you use your browser's refresh button to update your view of the data. To update the display of an analysis correctly, use the Refresh icon Refresh icon in the analysis's toolbar instead.

Links to websites do not work if the URL contains a forward slash (/) at the end

If you create a link in a document to open the URL of a web page (for example, http://www.google.com/), an error message may be displayed instead of the web page when the link is clicked. In order to display linked web pages properly, remove the forward slash (/) at the end of the link URL.

Items in a List Box style selector are cut off in Flash Mode

Items in a List Box style selector may be displayed as larger in Flash Mode than in other display modes, such as Interactive Mode. Consider doing the following:

Cannot recalculate the values of derived metrics in a Transaction Services-enabled document

Web does not support using a button or link to recalculate derived metrics displayed in text fields. To allow users to recalculate the values of derived metrics in your Transaction Services-enabled document, consider displaying your data in a grid instead. For steps, see the Report Services Document Creation Guide.
