Selecting an appropriate graph style

The greatest advantage of graph reports is that they provide a visual view of a set of data, which allows for quick analysis. How effective that view is depends on the type of graph selected to display the information and the graph components associated with the display (titles, labels, footnotes, and so on). MicroStrategy provides a number of graph report styles to meet your reporting needs. A graph style is the type of graph, such as vertical stacked, horizontal bipolar absolute, and so on.

Each graph style has its own sub-types. For example, a vertical bar graph report can be displayed as side by side, stacked, or any of the other sub-types associated with vertical bar graphs.

To display properly, each graph style requires certain types of data. For requirements for each graph style, see Minimum object requirements for each graph style.

For an introduction to graph reports and complete details on each graph style available in MicroStrategy, see the Graphing chapter in the MicroStrategy Advanced Reporting Guide.

To apply a graph style

  1. Click the name of a report to execute it. The report must be displayed in Grid view or Grid and Graph view.

  2. From the Home menu, select Graph.

  3. Right-click the graph and then select Format. The Format: Graph dialog box is displayed.

  4. On the General tab, from the Graph Type drop-down list, select a graph style. The Graph Sub-type drop-down list is updated with the available sub-types for the selected graph style.

  5. From the Graph Sub-type drop-down list, select a graph sub-type.

  6. Click OK.

Not all graph styles are applicable to all reports. You will see an error message if you choose an inapplicable graph type. For requirements for each graph style, see Minimum object requirements for each graph style.
